Getting Started
As a new leader in Scouting you’ll need to complete the Getting Started training modules. This training is intended to ensure you have the skills, understanding and tools to carry out the role effectively.
The training modules need to be completed within your first 5 months in Scouting, so that your full warrant can be issued. As a warranted leader you’ll have passed the training and validation requirements, and will be insured to carry out Scouting activities.
Help completing your training
At 1st Finchampstead we have two Leader Mentors, who will help you plan and validate these modules, and guide you through your learning process. The Group Scout Leader is ultimately responsible for ensuring you achieve your training.
The Modules
Most volunteers wishing to become leaders need to complete Modules 1, 2 and 3. If you’re going to be a Line Manager, then you’ll need to complete Modules 1, 2 and 4 instead.
Module 1 – Essential Information
This covers the fundamental values of Scouting, Safeguarding, Risk Assessment and the support structure available to you. It should take about an hour to complete.

Module 3 – Tools for the Role
This covers the fundamental values of leading a section. It should take about 30 minutes to complete.
These are available to complete online. You will receive a certificate at the end of each course. Please either print these or save them as image files and email them to me.
Training Validation
Scout training needs to be validated with practical evidence and knowledge from leading the section. For Modules 1 and 3, this includes:
* a risk assessment you have completed
* evidence, or a witness statement, that you have run a Promise/Law/Fundamentals activity, or an anti-bullying activity, or similar
* evidence you have planned and run (or assisted) in an activity, plus a ceremony appropriate to your section.
Validation normally takes place over the course of an evening with your Mentor or a Training Advisor.
